The Town of Amherst Highway Department offers a free drop-off for electronic waste (e-waste) at their North Forest Road location.
As of January 1, 2015 it is New York State Law that electronic devices are not accepted curbside.
The Amherst Highway Department will only accept the listed items at the Amherst Highway Department,1042 North Forest Road, 7 days a week from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Residents must check in at Dispatch before dropping off electronics. These items include but are not limited to:

- TELEVISIONS ARE NOT ACCEPTED AT THE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT
If you have questions, please call the Highway Department directly at (716) 631-7117… or visit the Amherst Highway Department website.
Lots of signage on that gate. I love the font that “Electronics Recycling” is in. So digital and fitting.
You would be amazed how truly popular this service of the town is. On many days, dozens of citizens unload multiple items each. Judging by the number of TV sets dropped off alone it would be easy to assume there shouldn’t be a single standard definition set left in any home in Amherst by this point, yet they keep coming. By the way, electronics drop off is allowed on the weekends when the Highway Department is open for snow watch – Nov 1st to April 1st.
I wish the town would consider a day to go through the neighborhoods for electronic recycle once a year or every 6 months. The hours are not great for week-ends ( when much work around the home is done ) Also, not everyone can lift some of these items even if someone helps get them into a vehicle. Otherwise, I am glad service is available.
There are quite a few sites within Erie County that accept electronic waste. I’m not sure if any of them will pick up at someone’s home, though. Here’s a good list with phone numbers and web sites.
Thanks
Amherst is now accepting calls so they will pick up TVs at curb for residents. This is as of February 2016.
The web site indicates times as 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The “Types of Accepted Materials” documents indicates times as 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
You may wish to reflect the correct times in both places.
Thanks!
I’ve updated the page to reflect the change in hours. Thank you for letting me know!
Are charge cord and adapters accepted?
Yes, I believe they are accepted.
Do you accept old media; CDs, DVDs, tapes?
You can check directly with the Amherst Highway Department at (716) 631-7117.
Where can I dispose my flat screen t.v. that does not work anymore. I want it gone and don’t know where to go. Please any suggestions
The Amherst Highway Department no longer accepts televisions for e-waste.
ATR no longer accepts consumer waste as of February 1st 2018
How do I get rid of a tv? No curb pick up. Can’t take to the recycling center. Who takes them?
Unfortunately there are no longer places locally that will accept tube TVs. You’ll need to wait for special e-waste events. The next one in this area is MAY 19, sponsored by NYS Senator Mike Ranzenhofer. It will be held in front of Eastern Hills Mall from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Do you take empty propane cylinders for recycling? If not, who does?
Sorry, although I wrote about the Town of Amherst’s e-waste program, I’m not affiliated with the town in any way. I’m not sure about propane tank recycling.
so what are we supposed to do with them. the eastern hills mall event was extremely crowded
Unfortunately, I think you’ll have to wait for the next sponsored e-waste dropoff program – and then wait. I don’t personally have anything to do with e-waste recycling. I merely wrote about it on my blog. So I’m just like you: I sat in my car for 40 minutes at Eastern Hills Mall waiting to drop of the last of my tube TVs.
Do recycle Keuring coffee brewers?
I don’t speak for the Town of Amherst recycling rules. But my opinion is a coffee maker would be suitable for disposal with your normal garbage.
Where and how would I get rid of my huge standard definition TV? Is there a pickup service b/c I’ve been hording it b/c it makes no sense to pay for transportation to get rid of garbage… *sigh*
Can I recycle old VCR tapes, CDs and floppy discs at the Amherst Town Electronics Recycling Center?
You can dispose of VCR tapes, CDs and floppy discs in your regular trash.
Thanks MIke!
where can I recycle a television set, dvr player and a tower fan?
If you live in the Town of Amherst, you can take the DVR player and tower fan to the highway department headquarters at 1042 North Forest Road, Amherst — 7 days a week from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Residents must check in at Dispatch before dropping off electronics. They will accept flat screen TVs, but unfortunately, they WILL NOT accept the older “tube” TVs. You’ll have to wait for their periodic e-waste drop-off opportunities. They’re held a couple times a year in different locales.
