Is your speech “3 AM Ready”?

If someone shook me awake at 3 AM and told me to deliver tomorrow’s wedding ceremony right now, could I do it? That’s my test. I don’t stop working until the answer is yes.

I spent a career giving presentations, talks, and speeches. Now I write and deliver custom wedding ceremonies, standing in front of a couple and everyone who loves them. Different rooms, same question.

I tinker until the last minute

I’m a fiddler. I’ll trade one word for a better word an hour before I speak. Left alone, that habit is dangerous. You can polish yourself right off a cliff.

The 3 AM test is what makes it safe. Once I pass it, everything after is upside. The ceremony already works. I’m only making it better.

What the test means

It doesn’t mean memorized. I’ll have the pages in my hand. It means the words are already mine, and they’re ready to deliver.

How you get there

Finish early. That’s the key. Not “close to done” early. Actually finished, with days to spare. Refining after that is a bonus.

Then I read it out loud, standing up, more than once. Silent reading is not nearly as good. Every place you stumble is a sentence that needs work.

Bottom Line

It was never about performing at 3 AM. It’s about having the time to refine, rehearse, and relax until every word is ready. That’s what gives me the confidence to deliver my best work.
