Is your Mac’s desktop a messy jumble of icons? This organizational technique is quick and easy — and it works great for me.

I prefer cleaning up by kind because when I’m looking for something on the desktop, I always know what type of document it is… PDF, word processing, image, spreadsheet, etc. Grouping the same kind of icons together makes it easy to zero-in on the specific one I want.

After a little fine tuning, I’m done! Neatly arranged desktop document icons on the left, and plenty of free desktop space on the right!

Now, as you start to accumulate new icons (on the right), you can quickly find them, move them or delete them as desired.
